Publisher's Summary
Maddie is a writer of local history but wants to use her words to unlock the hidden truths that lay just below the surface of her life. But it’s magnetic words on a refrigerator door – Have dreams. Must travel – that push Maddie into the journey she must take: the search for what she has yearned for all her life: independence and freedom from the abusive fanaticism of her parents’ religious beliefs. From Vancouver in the sixties to present day Mexico and a small island on the Canadian west coast, Nine Birds Singing is a love affair with words. It weaves through past glories and youthful hubris in a search for understanding and acceptance. Profound friendship, skewed love and loss all play a role in Maddie’s search for redemption.

Praise for Nine Birds Singing

“In Nine Birds Singing, Edyth Anstey Hanen’s appealing narrator Maddie recalls and examines her own search for independence from her parents’ restrictive values. “If, like me, you despair for the collapse of the English language take comfort. In Nine Birds Singing you will discover a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of delights. Edythe Anstey Hanen not only uses the basic blocks of language, words, to propel her characters and her story, each word has been selected with meticulous care with attention to its meaning and its ability to resonate. The work is a symphony for the logophile. Don’t miss it.” -Patrick Taylor. USA Today, New York Times and Globe and Mail best-selling author of the Irish Country Doctor series
“Readers will enjoy the unique views and poetic pacing of Nine Birds Singing by Edythe Anstey Hanen. She savours and survives landscapes and relationships in teasing but tasty quick episodes. Her novel takes readers via circular time travelling through decades of Mattie’s life in Canada and Mexico. Enjoy this new voice!” -Bernice Lever, Small Acts, Black Moss Press, 2016

My Perspective

Nine Birds Singing is the story of Maddie's finding herself.
It's the part of the story that drew me to it.
Maddie is a survivor, most obviously from her parents' religious fanatacism, a toxic friendship with Thea, and an array of romantic relationships that don't work, culminating with Joey.
Maddie finds solace in words and in her true friendship with Carmelita.
I think if you're a word person, you'll get this novel and want to even re-read it so that you can follow the lyrical tone again once you've read quickly for the narrative.
Nine Birds Singing isn't a quick summer read for sure...it's one you want to take time to savor.

Books I Didn't Like But Don't Regret Reading

I don't read much that I don't like.
That doesn't mean I like everything.
I simply don't pick up much I don't THINK I'll like.
As I approach the big 5-0, I find this to be even truer of myself.
Still, I don't think I've met a book I regret reading...even the ones I didn't like taught me something about myself.

**Warning, this post is a little snarky***

Books I Picked Up Because I Thought I'd Like Them Or Because Everybody Was Reading Them...But Then Hated and Didn't Even Feel Guilty.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
After I turned the final page of Gone Girl, I threw it against the wall...literally.
Really.
Not even kidding.
These two people deserve each other.

Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
Couldn't do it.
Tried multiple times.
Too much hype. Won't get tricked again.

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy
This one I WANT to read so badly...still...right now...have y'all seen how big this is?
Again, started many times...tried audio and a couple of readalongs too.
Not ready for this kind of commitment ;)

Everybody's Got Something by Robin Roberts
I feel mean for adding this one on my list :(
I just...
I don't know.
Too much smiling.

Marley and Me by John Grogan
Uh-uh.
No way.
Dog dies.
I'm out.
I wanted to be a big girl.
I really did.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris
My brain is wired similar to Sedaris I think...I couldn't keep up...I kept finding myself thinking of other things...and then I'd have to back up and re-read.
Finally gave up.

I Still Dream about You by Fannie Flag
I wanted to like this one soooooo much.
I loved Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe...LOVED.
And I love Birmingham...but I just couldn't stomach this one...beauty queens, high school ridiculousness...blech.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett
The Blind Side on steroids.
Nope.
Yes, I am from Mississippi.
Nope. Still couldn't.
Tired of the surface level stereotypes...and the so-called "heroes" of the South.

Taltos by Anne Rice
I LOVED The Witches...LOVED!
But, I hurt myself rolling my eyes as I struggled to get through with Taltos...yeesh.
Taltos...what the?
Even my monsters need to be believable.

Bossypants by Tina Fey
Another one that I truly WANTED to like.
There was so much about 30 Rock that I felt left out.
Thanks, Tina, for inviting me to the party...where I sat in the corner feeling very alone.

And there you have it.
I didn't like these but don't regret giving them a shot.

Till next week :)
