Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop - June 29-July 5

I've been blogging for 3 years, and I've only had one Giveaway :(
The biggest reason for my lack of giveaways is that I really use my books...I write in them, highlight, annotate, break the bindings etc. I know for some folks this is sacrilege, but it's just natural to me.
I love my books; they were meant to be loved and read and loved again...kinda like a beloved toy from your childhood :)
Anyhoo, being new to this giveaway thingie, I wasn't sure how other bloggers feel about getting books that have obviously already been read.
So, for my first giveaway prize, I'm offering a book from Amazon up to $20.  As long as Amazon ships to you, I'm game.

All I ask is that you become a Follower of Peppermint Ph.D., GFC or Networked Blogs, and leave a comment telling me how you feel about receiving pre-read books for giveaway prizes :)
Also, leave your email and blog address so I can contact you if you win.
You can pick out your prize after you win :)
That's it.

You're certainly welcome to follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, via email and/or Google reader if you want to do those too, and I'll be glad to count those as extra chances to win; just be sure to mention any extra follows in the comments as well.

The hop runs through July 5 so I'll choose a winner the old fashioned way...probably names in a hat kinda thing unless things get too crazy (I can only hope, right?) ;)
I'll post the winner on the afternoon of July 6.

Here are the rules for the Freedom to Read Giveaway Hop
.Hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer & Katie @ Mundie Moms
June 29th to July 5th
  • You must host a giveaway on your site, you are responsible for obtaining a prize for giveaway and taking care of the shipping charges.
  • You must giveaway something a reader, author or blogger would enjoy.
  • Your giveaway post must include the hop image & linky (or links to the host's sites if you can't get the linky to work).
  • Please only 1 mandatory entry - all others must be optional - Keep It Simple! No long lists of things for people to do. If you have dozens of things for people to do I will delete your blog from the linky.
  • Your post must be live by 12:01 EST on June 29th. (That is 9 pm June 28th if you live in California)
  • The giveaway must be specifically for this hop.
  • Your site must be family friendly - no erotica or 18+ sites. Your site & giveaway must be free of steamy images and book covers. If it would embarrass me to have my teenagers see it, it can't be on your site.
  • It is your responsibility to check the linky on June 29th to be sure you are still on the linky and that your link is accurate. Please send me a direct link to your post when it goes live.
  • If you are using Rafflecopter set it to begin on JUNE 28th and to end on JULY 6th. Do not use the Point Values +4, +5, +10 or +25.

GO AHEAD NOW AND HOP ALL AROUND...IF YOU DON'T HOP, YOU WON'T WIN!!!

  1. I completely approve of giving away gently loved books, and in fact they're the only ones I have given away! Just started following you on pinterest too (yay pinterest!)

Oh yeah, and I fully approve of the picking names out of a hat, literally. I did that myself too :)

  2. Thanks for the giveaway! I also like to write in my books (especially if they are ARCs), so having a book that someone has already written in might be confusing. However, I fully approve of you doing giveaways featuring used books, as long as you make that clear. If someone doesn't want a used book, they don't have to enter. I think you'll find enough people that do want it to make the giveaway worthwhile. readhandedlibrarian (at) gmail (dot) com.

    1. Julie, my middle daughter was cleaning off some shelves this past week and gave me a stack of books she didn't want anymore. A couple of them were classics from her AP English class where they are required to annotate. I opened one I haven't read and was struck by how distracting her annotations would be for me.

I don't mind used books as giveaways as long as it's mentioned they are used and preferably lightly used. Something that's tatered and written in (other than corrections the editor missed)really shouldn't be part of a giveaway.

  4. I'm a follower on GFC (Julie) and liked your Facebook page (My Book Retreat).

I have no problem with receiving pre-read books through giveaways but I wouldn't want one with writing in it. The only reason for that is that I often swap books through Paperback Swap, and I wouldn't be able to do that if the book had writing in it. I rarely hold onto books because I never re-read them. So I prefer books I can pass along. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  6. I'm also fine with receiving a used book but I'm not so sure about highlights and notes on the margin -- I think it would distract me.

But if the book is in good, readable condition, I'd be happy to receive it.

I'm not sure if I can enter, because I'm not from the USA - but...
You know, The Book Depository ships for free worldwide. Just saying. It would be better than paying for shipping via Amazon :D
You know, I actually love used books. If they have some high lights it's even better, because I feel the connection with person who read them before :) I often buy second hand books.

  17. I have no problem at all with pre-loved books. In fact, my husband, daughter and I shop the book sections of Goodwill, used book stores and thrift shoppes all the time. We give huge boxes of lightly used books to our nieces and nephews for their birthdays and they love getting them.

All that being said, a few highlights are okay, but those that have three colors of markers on every other page are difficult to read and I don't buy those.

She saw one of my paperbacks flipped open and began to lecture me on the evils of wear and tear on the book's spine, and how flat bookmarks should be our best friend. I'm more like you. My books are my buddies. Pages get wrinkled, dog-eared, maybe a little spot here and there from potato-chip-fingers. I like them that way. A well worn book is a well loved book!

I myself only read on my Kindle Fire anymore, (eyes are bad, need the large print, and its easier, i can highlight without damage, and the dictionary is a great thing, and I can add notes) I rarely enter contest for paperbacks or hardbacks, unless they are ones that I would add to a series of a collections, like first editions, ect. I just don't read anything but ebooks. Thats me. IF my eyes allowed me to read normal books, I would not mind pre-read books as long as no writing, or highlighting, that's distracting for me. I think it's cool to have a pre- read book. It feels great to know while reading that somebody else once read it, and you end up sharing a story with that person, that's the common point you have with them, even though you may be physically apart. :)

    1. I agree with that, Sarika...I've decided while reading everyone's comments that I'm going to read a pre-read book of both of my older daughters' which has been annotated. Should be interesting :)

Pre-read books are fine. Just as long as they're in decent condition. I've received books in horrible condition that have or have smelled like cigarettes, which drives me insane.

I kind of like seeing notes and highlights in books, it shows that the book was loved, and it is always interesting to see what struck the previous reader.

    1. I think it's pretty interesting as well :) I'm going to do a little experiment of my own with a book that each of my older daughters had to read in AP English. Each has her own annotating/highlighting etc. Should be fun :)

  63. Hi,

First of all, thank you for being part of this giveaway hop, and for your immense generosity. I really began loving to annotate my books during my AP courses in high school, although, I despised that it was "required", and that I couldn't choose to write on sticky notes in the margins. Using sticky notes is what I do now, especially in text books, but also in books I read for leisure because sometimes I want to just jot down my thoughts for a review, or remember a quote.

I think offering pre-read, or even annotated, books is not a bad idea at all! As long as you make it clear in your post what the condition of the book is, I think it's a brilliant idea for books to go from one book-lover to the next! :) Those who are bothered by it will refrain from entering the giveaway, and those who aren't will gladly benefit from your generosity. In my case, I am all about the narrative and characters, the actual CONDITION of the book never factors into how much I love it.

Again, thank you for your immense generosity, and hope you have an amazing summer! Happy 4th of July & Let Freedom ring... :D

    1. Thanks for your input! I have so enjoyed getting to "meet" so many new bloggers through this giveaway! I never knew it could be so much fun!!! :)
I do think it's key to let others know up front what condition the book is in. If they're ok with a pre-read book, they'll enter. If not, they won't. That's ok. :) I'm going to start using more post-its too...the margins are usually too narrow to make as many notes as I'd like anyway.

  64. I don't really mind used books, because I buy a lot of pre-owned books in the best condition possible. But I understand that you don't like to part with your books. I am the same way. I have a problem lending my books to friends because they either don't give them back or they give it back in an awful state, then I just have to buy books again to replace it. I don't mind notes but I really don't like coffee stains and ripped covers. Thank you for doing this giveaway!!!!

    1. I loaned a series to a friend of mine for her to catch up. She lost one of the books and replaced it...but the cover of the one she bought was not the same original cover as the book I loaned her :( That made me sad bc I tend to like the original covers of books I'm going to keep...especially if the book gets made into a tv movie or something. I ended up replacing that one as well :(

  83. I treat my books like babies and won't eat or anything when I'm reading them. Most of my books I've reread a lot and you can't tell they've been read. If the book is in great shape then I don't mind if it's been used as long as the backbone hasn't been broken. If you break the backbone then lots of times the pages will fall out. I know because I work in a place that makes magazines.
