Impressive!

My middle child told me a story yesterday that left me speechless.

She was sitting in Advanced Algebra working on homework...the next day's homework.
The teacher, seeing that she was writing something while he was going over problems on the board, stopped and asked her what she was doing.

"Homework," my middle child replied.

"You were supposed to already have that done," replied said teacher.

"I do," she rebutted..."I'm working on tomorrow's homework."

Thinking that she was just your average student who was trying to get out of getting caught doodling in class, the teacher walked over to my middle child's desk to look at what she was writing.
He examined her homework that he was going over on the board...and the next day's homework which she was actually almost finished with.

He looked at her and said, "You realize this is not due till tomorrow?"

My middle child said, "Yes, but I have all of today's assignment complete and I didn't want to have so much to do at home."

After closely examining her papers the teacher saw that not only did my middle child have the answers correct for the current assignment, but she also had the correct answers for the next day's assignment for which the teacher had not even yet taught the skills.

He asked her if she could take a test right then about the current assignment and pass it.

She assured him she could.

He then proceeded to write a problem on her paper and asked her to work it right then and there.

She did.

She worked it correctly.

"Carry on," the teacher said and returned to the board to continue going over the current assignment.

:)

The story impresses me because I'm a Liberal Arts/English person.
I made a D in College Algebra.
It was the happiest day of my life.

Carry on, Whit...Carry on :)

  4. Don't you just want to beam with pride??? I didn't even make a "D" in Algebra...I FAILED and had to retake the class during the summer. Math is my enemy. Math makes me cry! Math frustrates the living daylights out of me. Can I beam with pride over your daughter's accomplishments too? :) And...just the fact that she is so devoted to her education. Smart girl!

  5. Lynn, I signed up for College Algebra every semester after I entered college...on the last possible date to withdraw without a grade, I would jump ship or else I would have failed as well. Finally the semester before I student taught I had no choice but to stick it out. I never missed a class, did every homework assignment, all and every extra credit work that was offered and attended study groups...and STILL made a D. Sheesh!! Soooo glad those days are over!! I am a proud Mama, no doubt!! :):)

  6. What a great story! Not only does your kid rock, but I'm pretty impressed that the teacher verified and moved on. Too many times teachers verify and still stop the student from working ahead.
