Day 412 - Can't Wait Wednesday - The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson

I've picked up Joshilyn Jackson's books many times...but have always put them back down for one reason or another...I keep seeing this one though...early readers are saying it's the one to read...

The Almost Sisters by Joshilyn Jackson

Here's the synopsis and first remarks from Amazon:
(I've highlighted in red the parts that yell at me loud and clear that I must read this book!)

With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, the author of gods in Alabama pens a powerful, emotionally resonant novel of the South that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality---the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we really are.
Superheroes have always been Leia Birch Briggs’ weakness. One tequila-soaked night at a comics convention, the usually level-headed graphic novelist is swept off her barstool by a handsome and anonymous Batman.
It turns out the caped crusader has left her with more than just a nice, fuzzy memory. She’s having a baby boy—an unexpected but not unhappy development in the thirty-eight year-old’s life. But before Leia can break the news of her impending single-motherhood (including the fact that her baby is biracial) to her conventional, Southern family, her step-sister Rachel’s marriage implodes. Worse, she learns her beloved ninety-year-old grandmother, Birchie, is losing her mind, and she’s been hiding her dementia with the help of Wattie, her best friend since girlhood.
Leia returns to Alabama to put her grandmother’s affairs in order, clean out the big Victorian that has been in the Birch family for generations, and tell her family that she’s pregnant. Yet just when Leia thinks she’s got it all under control, she learns that illness is not the only thing Birchie’s been hiding. Tucked in the attic is a dangerous secret with roots that reach all the way back to the Civil War. Its exposure threatens the family’s freedom and future, and it will change everything about how Leia sees herself and her sister, her son and his missing father, and the world she thinks she knows.

The Almost Sisters will be published on July 11...I'm not so excited about it that I will pay full price for it, but if I'm every going to give Joshilyn Jackson a try, I think this is most definitely the book!

What have you heard about The Almost Sisters?

  1. I haven't personally heard of the author or her books I'm afraid! From reading the description of the book though, I could imagine this kind of thing being made into a film. Hope you get a chance to read and enjoy it!

    1. I thought the very same thing about the book being made into a film! I listened to a podcast just today where an early reviewer was singing the book's praises so I'll definitely have to give this one a go :)

  2. I've not read her before but I won a book from her when she hosted a giveaway on Facebook so I will be reading her soon. BTW, she is absolutely charming on FB. Interacting with bloggers and readers and just so, so funny. I love it when authors interact with readers. Makes me want to read their books.

    1. You are so right, Ti! Adriana Trigianni was that way when I reviewed a couple of her books early on. It does most definitely make you want to read their books when they reach out :) I'm headed to Joshilyn Jackson's FB page right now!
