Happy Birthday, Ed

I know a fella who was born 49 years ago today.  He's a good fella...a really good fella and the firstborn of his family.  His mama used to dress him up in little ironed outfits, dress socks and those white hard-soled dress shoes that little kids used to wear (Do kids still wear those?)

His parents and parents' friends called him Li'l Ed after his daddy, Big Eddie.  As he grew, his parents added 3 more little whippersnapper boys to their brood, but Li'l Ed was always the big brother, the leader of the pack, the one the little ones followed around...the one who beat them up, the one who told on them and the one who they knew they could turn to in times of trouble.

Teenage Li'l Ed was a music aficianado, playing in various bands with his friends.  A natural talent, Li'l Ed could play the piano and guitar by ear.  He was also an athlete, a slim trim quarterback and can to this day tell you scores and plays from games he played over 25 years ago.

Fast forward a few years and Li'l Ed moved off to college.  He was a Romeo, melting various hearts and maneuvering dates so that girl A, never knew about girl B or C and girl B never knew about girl A or girl C...etc, etc, etc.  He only broke a few hearts along the way...he was mostly just having a good time.  Li'l Ed became Easy Ed in college because he just didn't seem to have any worries at all...his theme song should have been "Don't Worry; Be Happy"

Li'l Easy Ed's dream was to be a football coach and his career started off shortly after graduation and through graduate school on the sidelines of his alma mater.
It was during this time of his life that his path crossed mine.

Li'l Easy Ed was not in my plan.
But I knew from the moment he flipped my boyfriend's picture over on my desk at work that there was something about this guy.

After a few stops and starts (Li'l Easy Ed was still holding on to girl D and E just in case things didn't work out with me and I was engaged to someone else), he saved my life, which at that time was quickly spiraling out of control.

Ed is the most dependable person I've ever met and the most honest.  He is a character at times, and there are many times Li'l Easy Ed reminds me of Big Eddie.
Strong, but not afraid to admit weakness sometimes.
Honorable, even surrounded daily by dishonor.
A giver, without question and preferably anonymously.
A father in every sense of the word, unconditional love comes naturally to him.
And a natural caretaker, to those of us who literally belong to him and even to those who don't.

I'd like to smack him sometimes though.
He's a penny pincher, which collides frequently with my free spending ways.
And he can belt out a one liner that will knock your socks off...leaving you wondering how in the world he comes up with that stuff.
I generally give it right back to him and learned long ago not to get my feelings hurt.

One of my favorite things though is to listen to him playing his guitar (acoustic or electric) in our quiet house...no tv, no radio, no screaming, yelling and fighting from the kids bc they're listening too.
And my very favorite thing is when he looks me in the eyes and tells me he loves me.

I'm glad you were born, Li'l Easy Ed.
I love you.

Happy Birthday, Kendal!!

18 years ago today the Head of My Household and I welcomed our firstborn child into our family.

I will never forget the first time I heard her voice.
All of a sudden it became clear to me that there had been a living human being inside of me.
I was so overcome with the newness of this experience and will never forget the gamut of emotions that swept over my body.

When we brought her home, I remember vividly thinking, "Oh crap! What do I do now?"

I really wanted one of those nice nurses from the hospital to come home with me...but the hospital frowned on nurse kidnapping :/

She wasn't the best sleeper...and after 6 months she no longer took naps...OY!

She was and is now still constantly on the move,

has always had a strong personality,

and an unquenchable thirst to be in charge.

God Bless You if you get in her way ;)

She is a perfectionist.
It doesn't matter what anyone else expects; she expects perfection of herself.

She is a beauty.
Her look is unlike most people's, with dark eyes, long dark hair and a svelte athletic body

She is a lover of knowlege...

animals...

sports...

books...

and adventure

As the oldest she has paved the way for her sisters...dragging her parents through the first date, the first breakup, the first prom, the first driver's license, and very soon the first high school graduation.

I love you, Kendal and am so very proud of you!

Happy Birthday, Reagan!!

She's a Mama's girl
and my biggest fan

a tender heart and a sensitive soul

She's grown up with two teenage sisters and can carry on a conversation way above her age...sometimes to my chagrin :/
She's also pretty good at giving those teenage sisters a run for their money...she can sas with the best of them

She loves ICarly, Big Time Rush, Victoria Justice and Justin Bieber...as well as Spongebob Squarepants

She is frightened easily and needs desperately to know that whoever is in charge of her is really in charge and is going to protect her from robbers. (No, we have never been robbed)

She likes to do things for herself...and to do those things PERFECTLY

Her shoestrings must be exactly the same length and tied exactly the same way...and heaven forbid, don't forget to make them lay flat after triple knots are tied...
Sock seams must also line up perfectly across her toes...or else.

She likes to cook with me, and our Spring/Summer garden is just as much hers as it is mine...I honestly don't know which one of us gets the most pleasure from it ;)

She likes lizards (very small ones) and frogs...but is horrified of snakes and salamanders (salamanders look like snakes)

She is a shopaholic, more than even her sisters ever dreamed of being...she can go to the Gymboree website, choose her selections and sizes and load a cart...no, she does not have access to our debit cards :p

She's a card shark...UNO is her current favorite...along with Old Maid and Go Fish...The Head of My Household mostly plays cards with her, but she can sometimes rope the teenagers in as well.

She also may be the most creative of the bunch...she has free reign of scissors, paper, glue, crayons, markers, computer/printer, paint, etc. and has never once used any of these items in inappropriate ways (she cut her hair once...but her bangs did need trimming ;)

She can put together some of the wildest outfits you've ever seen and LOVES boots in Winter and flip-flops in Summer.

She is my baby...and I cannot imagine life without her.

Happy Birthday, Reagan!
